The Lenexa City Center Library is a new destination branch of the Johnson County Library located in the heart of the contemporary city center and new downtown for the City of Lenexa, KS. The library is set adjacent to the city hall, community center, restaurants, and public market, bounding one side of the new civic plaza. The Lenexa City Center Library serves the growing community with a place to learn, explore, create, and connect.
The library was designed as a large open loft-like space housing adult, teen, and juvenile collections on two levels. A two-story atrium serves as a large living room for the community, featuring views to the civic plaza and artwork by local artist Steven T. Johnson, a Caldecott Honor children’s book author/illustrator. Three large flexible meeting spaces and four smaller meeting spaces provide integrated technology solutions for community groups, tutoring, and collaborative discussions by both library staff and community members.
Patron convenience is at the forefront of the library’s automated conveyance system allowing patrons to both pick up holds and drop off returns via a drive-thru in the adjacent parking garage. The extended hours holds area provides registered patrons access to the secure holds lobby outside of regular operating hours and allows them to pick up their materials via self-check. The new Lenexa City Center Library incorporates a service model designed to enhance public access to the collections, focus services on patrons as well as integrate patron self-service strategies, and allow for staff mobility.
